Project duration : 2019-2021
My name is Khoeun Thida, and I am from Pursat province. I am one of the 10 female scholarship students from the first generation in 2019.
After graduating from high school in 2016, I faced many problems and difficulties in Phnom Penh, but I was determined to pursue my dreams. Not all problems are bad, as these challenges provided me with new opportunities for growth and development. They marked the time for me to step into the next stage of my life. My foundation year as a student from the province was particularly difficult. At that time, I lacked knowledge of foreign languages and struggled to communicate with classmates. Despite the pain and challenges, these experiences proved that I had chosen the right path.
In 2019, a major turning point came when I received a scholarship from Women in WASH (WIW). This opportunity opened the door to new learning experiences, allowing me to gain specialized knowledge in water and sanitation. Beyond academics, the scholarship enabled personal growth and self-awareness while giving me the chance to contribute to society. Volunteering during this period became an important part of my life, teaching me the value of giving back. Starting small, I participated in volunteer programs that made a meaningful impact and helped society thrive in ways I never imagined.
By 2021, I had a clear vision of who I wanted to be and what I wanted to achieve. Internships during this time allowed me to apply my knowledge and understand real-world challenges in my field of work. These experiences opened my eyes to a broader perspective and reinforced my belief that I was on the right path. My final year as a student culminated in writing my dissertation, which marked the final step toward achieving my goals and stepping into the future with confidence.
The scholarship gave me the chance to learn and develop new skills while stepping out of my comfort zone. It shaped both my career and personal growth, teaching me how to face challenges and find solutions. It also helped me broaden my perspective, plan for the future, build confidence, recognize my strengths, and become more resilient. Volunteering became an integral part of this journey, allowing me to contribute to meaningful causes while gaining practical experience and a deeper understanding of the world around me. These experiences not only allowed me to help others but also played a significant role in my growth, making me someone capable of supporting both myself and society.
After graduating from university in 2021, I entered the field of construction. I was responsible for reviewing and verifying the mechanical and electrical (M&E) drawings as part of the bidding process, ensuring their accuracy and technical soundness. I designed plumbing systems for buildings, inspected the installation of these systems, and ensured safety compliance at construction sites.
When I began working in this field, I noticed the scarcity of women in the industry. However, this did not deter me. I am proud to continue working in this field with enthusiasm and dedication.
To all the next generation of girls, remember that education is your greatest tool. It opens the door to endless opportunities and helps you create the future you deserve. No matter how difficult the journey may seem, never give up on your studies. Challenges will come, but with each lesson, you grow stronger, smarter, and more capable. The knowledge you gain today will empower you tomorrow, giving you the confidence and skills to overcome any obstacle. Stay confident, focused, and committed, knowing that your efforts will pay off. You have the power to create change, achieve your dreams, and inspire others. Keep moving forward and always remember: Education is the key to unlocking your full potential.
