My name is Heng Seangmeng, and member of the Youth Leadership in WASH Action (YLWA) Cohort 2. I graduated with a master’s degree from the Institute of Technology of Cambodia, majoring in Water and Environmental Engineering. After graduating, I started looking for a job and by chance, I saw CSW’s announcement about Youth Leadership in WASH Action Cohort 2 program. I am interested in this program, and thus I decided to apply for a position. Later, I got an accepted email, and my journey at YLWA started in March. The program aims to send a new generation of engineers to private water supply operations in the province to help and learn from them about their operation system.

Before we started working on our destination private water supply station, all YLWA members had to join a one-week training organized by the program. Through the training, all YLWA members got to know each other and we also played, learned, and shared our stories and experiences. At the end of March, I started my journey at Svay Romiet Water Supply in Khash Kandal, Kandal province. The program assigned me and other YLWA members to stand by at Svay Romiet station.

Thus, we rented a house to live near the station. I did feel so nervous on the first day even though I did prepare myself beforehand. It is never easy to adapt to a new environment. It was hard in the first month because I was a fresher here so, I needed to get to know everyone in the station and their work system. However, everything starting to get better and better through the day.

Through this program, I learned that self-management, leadership skills, and communication are important factors that you need to have. I became braver in communicating with others than before. Moreover, I have become more independent in working alone, sharing ideas and managing my tasks. Besides, I also have to adapt to my new living environment, including local people, their living styles, food tastes, and culture. But everyone is kind and friendly and thus slowly everything is getting better.

In conclusion, I learned a lot from this program, I made new friends and gained new knowledge and experiences. YLWA gave me plenty of good memories and benefits and I feel grateful that I got an opportunity to join this program.
